Some Background info on the production of Desert Beetles:
Press releases were put out in the general Arizona area in February 1993 calling on local bands to submit to Soft Shoulder Music, Ltd. a Beatles cover song. A request to have each band inform the record company of their particular selection was made in order to not have all the bands recording the same song.... "first come, first served" was the rule of the day for song selection.
Soft Shoulder Records agreed to handle all licensing of the music. The response was quite good with over 40 local artists responding to the call. A deadline of May 15th was imposed and a small gathering of local music types (DJ's, Record Retailers, Indie Label owners...) sat down and gave feedback on the songs that they liked.
From there the formidable task of choosing just 13 songs was made....Big Fun! There were some excellent songs that didn't make the cut...but money for licensing and manufacturing was tight and only so many songs could be on the album. Alas the album was released in early September, with 3 live shows in different parts of the city featuring the artists on the album playing songs of their own as well as those of the Beatles.
